Filter cloths play an important role in the filtering process, serving as the foundation of solid liquid separation. As a depth filter, the filter press collect particles or solid materials mainly by filter medium (filter cloth). During filtering process, solid materials will accumulated on the filter cloth and form filter cakes under pump pressure. With the accumulation of solid materials, particles whose diameter is smaller than the opening in the filter press, will also be left in the filter chamber.

Common Filter cloth materials

Fabric material

Introduction

Polypropylene

It is common material. It has strong resistance to acid-base solutions. In addition, satin finish is added to the fiber so as to make easy cake release. And it is the most popular material.

Polyester

It is usually used when operating temperature is over 180 ℃ or when there is oxidizing agents.

Nylon

Nylon belongs to durable fiber. It is chosen for its long service life. Though its cost is higher, good durability makes it also a hot-sale product.

Related terms about filter cloth

Now that we have discussed the function and materials of filter cloth, let’s know some common terms about filter cloths, which may help us when we choose filter cloth and filter press.

  • Cloth blinding

The porosity of filter cloth is hindered, which greatly influence filtration performance. And the filtrate cannot pass through.

  • Monofilament cloth

The materials for making monofilament cloth is similar to fishing line. The monofilament cloth is more permeable, which allows higher flow rate. In addition, the fiber are single, smooth and round extensions. Its biggest feature is good cake release. But its durability is not good.

  • Multifilament fibers

Being different with monofilament cloth, multifilament fibers are grouped together in as single strand. It has good particle retention and durability.

  • Mono-multi cloth

It combines the benefits from both monofilament cloth and multifilament fibers. In view of its advantages, mono-multi cloth is popular, especially for solid liquid separation in winemaking.

  • Weave pattern

The most common weave patterns include plain weave, twill weave and satin weave.
